Mad Duck Cyclery / Our story

Three friends.
A little rum.
A lot of miles.

The Mad Duck story began in the Caribbean, with three best friends and an idea that followed them home.

01 / An idea worth bringing home

It seemed like a good idea at Foxy’s.

Some business ideas begin around a conference table. Ours came together during a sailing trip in the Virgin Islands, after a few hours of day drinking at Foxy’s on Jost Van Dyke.

Terry Musar, Gary Clinkingbeard, and Clarence Muller were three best friends enjoying the Caribbean and imagining what they might build together back home. Somewhere in that rum-infused conversation, the idea of opening a bike shop took hold.

But the bikes were only part of it.

They wanted a place where friends could gather. Where a conversation could wander from yesterday’s ride to the next adventure. Where someone could stop by with a question, tell a story, and end up staying longer than planned.

A place that felt like being among friends—even on your first visit.

Plenty of vacation ideas never make it past the flight home. This one became Mad Duck.

The people behind the idea: Terry Musar, Gary Clinkingbeard, and Clarence Muller.

02 / Bringing the idea home

From a Caribbean conversation to a Texas bike shop.

Back in Grapevine, Texas, the three friends set about turning that conversation into a place people could walk into.

Their backgrounds included telecommunications and heavy equipment repair. What connected them was friendship, a love of riding, and the desire to spend their days doing something they cared about.

That spirit gave Mad Duck its personality. Serious enthusiasm for bicycles. A sense of humor about almost everything else. And an open invitation to come in and get comfortable.

The familiar shop in a former Wienerschnitzel building became a fitting home for the idea: a little unconventional, full of character, and easy to remember.

03 / A place to find your people

A bicycle brings you in.
The people bring you back.

Over the years, Mad Duck grew into a gathering place for riders. Group rides brought people together. Familiar faces became friends. Shop jerseys became something you recognized out on the road—a little reminder that you belonged to the same flock.

There was room for the rider chasing a faster time and the rider finding the confidence to go a little farther. Room for questions, mechanical mysteries, ambitious plans, and stories that probably got better with every telling.

That was the community Terry, Gary, and Clarence had imagined: people sharing what they loved and helping each other enjoy it more.

The spirit of Mad Duck

Come for a bike.
Stay for the stories.
Find someone to ride with.

The best part of the ride has always been the people you share it with.

04 / The story keeps growing

Three friends started it.
A whole flock made it their own.

The founding story belongs to three friends. Everything that followed has been shaped by the people who joined them.

The customers who brought their friends. The riders who welcomed someone new. The people who stopped in for a part and stayed to talk. Everyone who wore a Mad Duck jersey, shared a route, or made room for another rider.

They helped turn a rum-infused idea into a community with a life of its own.

We still love a beautiful bicycle. We love getting the details right and helping someone find a ride they can’t wait to take.

And we love what happens afterward: the places they go, the people they meet, and the stories they bring back.

There’s always room for another one.

Still riding. Still telling stories. Still Mad Duck.
